Plague Watch

A running brief on the suspected plague death near Irkutsk, Siberia. What is confirmed, what is not, and where it happened.

Status

Unconfirmed

A laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute died of severe pneumonia on 2 October. Russia says the cause was pneumonia of unknown origin, that no plague was found, and has ended its anti-epidemic measures after almost 5,000 tests found no dangerous pathogens. The WHO is still asking Russia for information on the cause, including about a reported second case that Moscow calls false.

Plague in brief

Bubonic

Usually from a flea bite. Swells the lymph nodes and generally does not pass between people.

Pneumonic

Infects the lungs, either spreading from bubonic plague or breathed in. Can pass between people through respiratory droplets.

Treatment

Ordinary antibiotics work. Untreated pneumonic plague is always fatal; recovery rates are high if treatment starts within 24 hours of symptoms. Incubation is one to seven days.
